In The Great Gatsby, the author uses the symbol of the eyes of T.J. Eckleberg to represent the eyes of god, or à very displeased onlooker. Many examples of symbolism can be seen throughout the novel, but the eyes of the doctor seem to be one of the most prominent, having an effect on nearly all of the characters. It can also be interpreted à number of different ways, and the author obviously had some kind of purpose or motive to use the symbol in his book. The eyes of the doctor can be seen from many perspectives, allowing for many different interpretations of its meaning. Most may say they see it as the eyes of God looking down at the run-down area below him in dismay, as evidenced when the author says “he was looking at the eyes of Doctor

Scott Fitzgerald’s way of advocating for good morals and ethics in his time, since the eyes are located at the site where some of the characters made their worst moral decisions, and the eyes beared witness to it all. À person seeing the novel from à different perspective may even say that Fitzgerald’s motives were religiously centered, and this is his way of advocating for à more widespread faith in god, as evidenced by the author making references to God in relation to the billboard in the novel multiple times. Or, perhaps it was à blend of many different motives coming together to form what the symbol finally ended up being. Either way, it was put in the novel for à reason.
