Without a doubt, classical Greek myths were created as a means to explain traditions, beliefs, and natural phenomena of archaic Greek society. Although Greek myths seem ancient to the current era, their concepts, and terminology continue to exist and are evident in modern society. In fact, the myths are prevalent in nearly every aspect of modern society due to the extensive reaches and capabilities of corporations. Able to interact with people worldwide, companies spread Greek ideas with the commodities they produce and sell. Modern companies use imagery and symbolism that allude to classical Greek myths to add background and details to their company’s name and products; moreover, as a part of their marketing plan, they deliberately manipulate …show more content…
Companies use the consumers’ general knowledge of Greek mythology and their assumptions about the myths’ plots and characters to sell their products. One of the most notable examples is the prominent Italian fashion company, Versace, whose logo consists of a symbol of Medusa’s head. Versace has one of the most iconic and recognizable logos in the fashion industry and the logo was deliberately chosen in order to represent the company and its products. In Greek mythology, Medusa is a Gorgon known for her absolute beauty and renowned delicacy before she offended the goddess Athena and was transformed into a horrific monster that turned anyone that glances at her into stone. Although it is simple, this general background of Medusa is enough to explain the ideals behind the fashion company’s logo. The logo is based on the original image of this Greek myth figure who is used to represent beauty and enchantment (Gevril). However, the latter representation of Medusa is also expressed in the company as Versace desired for anyone who views Versace’s products to be so amazed and overwhelmed that they too will become frozen as …show more content…
There are countless references of Greek myths that are seen in the names of corporations such as Amazon, the Internet-based retailer; Pandora, the music streaming service; and Trident, the chewing gum brand. All of these names play a role in Greek mythology; the Amazons are a race of warrior women, Pandora is the first woman created by the gods and releases evil to the world, and the trident is the three pronged spear of the god Poseidon (Companies). As it can be seen, Greek myths are mentioned in various different types of companies’ names. Many businesses employ this method so that consumers can infer the purpose and intentions of the company. This can be seen in the leading apparel and footwear company, Nike. In Greek myth, Nike is the goddess of victory both in battles and peaceful competition. She is often depicted erecting trophies, crowning victors, or recording victories on shields. Moreover, she is known for her incredible speed when running and flying (Role). In terms of the modern corporation, Nike is an appropriate name as the term “Nike” suggests agility, speed, and victory; all of which are qualities that a sportswear company would desire and want to advertise. Although the company did not use a common form of a symbol, the name of the company itself represents and stands for something else; that is the goddess of victory.
