Between 5 and 6 million Jews were slaughtered during the horrifying years of World War II. Night is a holocaust survivor's memory of the happenings before and inside the concentration camps, giving the vivid details of his horrid experiences. In Night, Elie Wiesel uses bread as a motif to demonstrate that in dire times food can be worth more than life and bring death as shown in Elie’s attempt to keep his tooth, the fight of death in the boxcars, and his father’s death. In the book, because of their starvation, bread is highly valued. “It could be useful to me one day, to buy some thing, some bread, or even time to live”(52). At this time Elie is referring to his gold tooth, which he was able to keep because the dentist was put in prison.
