Symbolism Of Animals In Grendel

Decent Essays
In the final chapter of Grendel by John, grendel tends to curse animals that surround him. For example, on page 174, Grendel states,”Poor Grendel's had an accident… So may you all” (Gardner pg. 174). Therefore, The author interprets this as a curse to the men and the animals that are around him.the author also states that,”They watch on evil, incredibly stupid, enjoying my destruction” (Gardner 174). Clearly, Grendel says that the people and animals watching him die are enjoying his death as it slowly happens. However, the author also describes this scene when he says,”Animals gather around me, enemies of old, to watch me die” (Gardner 173). To conclude, Grendel lays there with no help, no hope to get back up and survive. The men and animals

Grendel, since he is a descendent of Cain, is one that is cursed by God himself, forced to wage “his lonely war, inflicting constant cruelties” on people (116: line:164-165). I would say that he is evil because of the hatred of his neighbors have made him bitter, but he is also evil because he is a demon. They call him a “fiend out of hell”, one that loves to work evil in the world (114: line 100). Even though he may be bitter because of the resentment, the fact that he is a demon that came out of hell makes him a monster, something that is evil from the roots of his origin. He is linked to the man Cain who was cursed by God himself for killing his own brother, an event that would conjure up significant resentment of the human race, part of…

From the bat Grendel is introduced as a ravenous individual “...conceived by a pair of those monsters born of Cain, murderous creatures banished by God...” (The Gawain Poet ll. 20-22). His origin early reveals that he spawned from a murderous and savage human being from the biblical story, Cain and Abel. That is to say this ensues that Grendel's blood is that of evil and as the epic barely starts Grendel demonstrates malice actions.…

It is evident when it is said that, "his heart laughed, he relished the sight / Intended to tear the life from those bodies . . ." (Beowulf 289-290). Others saw what they thought was joy on the face of Grendel when he entered the mead hall. Grendel's appearance of being eager to kill made him look as if he was confident to continue with his plan. If Grendel was not as confident as he was, he would not have been able to be the successful killer he was known to be.…

Grendel is a beast like creature that is a tall, big, and has sharp claws that can rip through a piece of wood and later is invincible to weapons by the dragons’ enchantment. He has killed many people without a care to be given, “Afraid or not, I would go to the Meadhall, I knew (Gardner 158).” “The monster” wants only the people who has hurt him or put him through any pain to know what true fear is. He feels that he cannot show love to people he wants to but only fear. “If I cannot inspire love, I will cause fear, and chiefly towards you my arch-enemy (Shelly…

To begin with, the final words of Grendel “Poor Grendel’s had an accident… So may you all.” were meant as a curse to affect mankind, the animals, the kingdom and especially those who gathered to watch him die. Grendel explains that “ Animals gather around me, enemies of old, to watch me die” (Gardner 173). They watch him die with excitement because they portray him as a horrible beast and they finally killed him after so long. Although, another way Grendel’s last words can be meant as a curse is the way he explains that “ They watch with mindless, indifferent eyes, as calm and midnight black as the chasm below me” (Gardner 173).…

He begins to raid the mead hall and attack people more. During a raid Grendel says: “I eat and laugh and eat until I can barely walk, my chest-hair matted with dribbles blood, and then the roosters on the hill crow, and dawn comes over the roofs of the houses, and all at once I am filled with gloom again” (12-13). This quote shows the two sides of the character. The side that eats people without a second thought and the side that feels guilt or the one that doesn’t exactly feel joy from killing. Grendel had always had the power to kill a man, but he didn’t always have the animosity he does now towards men.…

An excuse could be that Grendel does not understand that the humans do not think of this as a game like he does but that idea is immediately failed by Grendel’s capacity for rational and philosophical thought. He understands that what he is doing is wrong but he does not stop because being the homicidal monster is the identity that was given to him. In reality, his monstrosity is a tragedy of the story. He has nothing else in the story: a mother who does not speak to him and beady-eyed relatives. His only friend is “[his] shadow” (8) and his ache for identity mirrors his ache for a friend: if he is something identifiable then there is someone else out there who is like him, who he can find and to whom he can relate.…

Grendel had already decided that he wanted war and death and slaughter, not peace and companionship. He refused to “parley or make peace with any Dane / nor stop his death-dealing nor pay the death-price” (155-156). His attacks didn’t cease “for twelve winters, seasons of woe,” and by that time, it has become doubtful that his motives are anything more than bloodlust and mindless rage (147). If, in the beginning, Grendel killed for revenge to make up for being cast out from the moment he was born, that motive has long since been lost after twelve winters of murder have passed. He had mercy on no one; “all were endangered; young and old,” and killed anyone he could reach…

Throughout the course of the book, it can be seen that Grendel is changing; slowly descending into a more brutal manner, embracing his fate as a monster. In the beginning, Grendel’s point of view is that he is a pitiful creature, but no monster. He deserves empathy, or someone to talk to, someone that will accept him. But from…
