Symbolism In Zora Neale Hurston's Spunk

In the short story “Spunk”, Zora Neale Hurston introduce a relatively good amount of examples of literary elements. In this essay, I will be including more of characterization, mood, and plot, but a little additional information and literary terms like symbolism. In a story characterization is the characters that are involved and described verbally and through actions. Mood is a certain feeling, emotion, or vibe throughout a story. The mood could be about the character or either what’s in the air. The plot of a story can be the order in which the main events in a story taking place or even just the actions itself.

Firstly, Spunk and Lena walked pass the store, holding hands like they are in a relationship, when really Lena is married to Joe. When they walked passed the store, the men outside the store was gossiping about them, the whole time. Elijah then mentioned to Joe, that it was his wife Lena with Joe. That is when Joe eased up behind Spunk trying to cut him with a razor, but end up getting shot. After he shot Spunk, he went back to the store to tell them about it and he said Joe “come out there wid a meat axe an’ made me kill him"(Hurston). I think Spunk over exaggerated because he know that Joe is not that brave. Spunk went to court about that case, and ended being let free, for self-defense. After, he left court Lena was waiting for him. They found another house and then he decided to marry her. One random night, Spunk and Lena was getting ready to lay down for bed and a black bobcat start to circle their house. So, Spunk went and got the gun to shoot it and when he did the cat stares him in the eyes. Spunk instant thought that it was Joe, coming back from hell to stop their wedding. After that happened Spunk started to live with fear. Finally, Spunk is like the best at a sawmill, he could even remain standing on logs as they move on down the line. One day Spunk just fall from the log into the saw-mill and injure himself really bad. Before, Spunk 's death, he accused Joe of pushing him off the log to fall in the
