One example of revealing actions in the story was when Percival threatened to put arsenic, a type of poison, in his tea. This shows the reader that the family members would rather lose an uncle than not get a share of his wealth. Their greed has blinded them and caused them to see Uncle Basil as an enemy, not a part of the family. The family has taken greed to the next level, and will do anything to get their hands on the fortune. The family also has no regard for Uncle Basil’s feelings and call him many mean names at the beginning of the story. This reveals to the reader that their greed has made the family members turn against each other and that they care more about their share of the money than their uncle’s feelings. Both of these examples in the story help the reader to understand that greed can tear families and relationships apart.
In “You Can’t Take It With You”, the author uses symbolism, dialogue, and revealing actions to exploit the true nature of the family members. Greediness can blind you from the things that truly matter in life. Eva-lis Wuorio ends the story without telling the reader whether or not the family found out about the lost fortune. If they did find out, would the family regret the poor way they treated Uncle Basil? Or would they be clueless about why Uncle Basil burned the money and turn against each other
