As I Lay Dying is a very interesting book that can keep the reader involved from start to finish, the author draws the reader into the story to make them involved with the characters; while the character are put through real life situations which the reader can relate to. Symbolism is a predominate literary device; bringing in each character to symbolize their own meaning, and tying them all into the story together. Anse symbolized the greed in human nature and how people can manipulate others into doing what they want and getting the outcome they want with minimal work. While Jewel symbolized the good side of human nature by caring for his mother and protecting her the best he can; even after she had passed away and they were on their way
