In this story, Zeena is truly the victim as her husband, Ethan, is constantly thinking about leaving her for her cousin, Mattie. Zeena starts to suspect a relationship between Mattie and Ethan. “His wife had never shown any jealousy of Mattie, but of late she had grumbled increasingly over the house-work and found oblique ways of attracting attention to the girl's inefficiency.” (1.13)
Zeena sees Mattie as a threat and is always looking for a reason to hate her. When the pickle dish is broken, Zeena felt devastated and she also found a reason to kick Mattie out of her house.
The pickle dish symbolizes Ethan and Zeena’s marriage. It represents the troubles they are going through. When the cat dropped the pickle dish, its destruction represented the destruction of their marriage. Instead of glueing the pieces back together, Ethan puts the pieces together but a since touch can break the pickle dish again. This symbolizes the future destruction of their marriage because Ethan knows that Zeena really cares for the dish but he doesn’t do much to fix it.
