They represent the relationships that are bonded and broken due to the building of this said fence. The characters create “fences” in their lives. Instances include the things that Troy wants to keep out of his life which are death and his relationships with his family and also the things that Rose wants to keep in her life which is her love for her family. This leads to Cory making a point that Troy isn’t getting anything done because he is always going to Taylors’ where he visits his mistress, Alberta (pg #). The death of ruler, especially during a war, often signifies the death and utter destruction of a community. Priam’s death as portrayed in both Virgil’s The Aeneid and Seneca’s Trojan Women shows the merciless slaughter of the king on an altar symbolizing the complete ruin of Troy. However, Virgil and Seneca portray Priam in a different light. In The Aeneid Priam is shown to be fighting to his death even though he is frail and old, whereas Seneca focuses on Priam’s death as just one of the many adding to the continual suffering of all the remaining Trojans. Virgil’s Priam is a symbol of Virgil’s notion of the ideal Roman leader, strong and fighting to the end, while to Seneca Priam’s death is not one of great importance rather just another…

Myles Weber, author of “Rescuing the Tragic Bully in August Wilson’s Fences”, proclaims that Troy is a thief and murderer in his youth, commits a full array of errors in middle age: He cheats on his wife, he exploits his brain-damaged brother, he covets and then blocks his son’s promising future, he speaks endlessly but doesn’t listen (Weber 673). First, the audience is confronted with Troy’s failure to support Cory. He is blocking his son’s promising future out of pure jealousy.…

Death is a complex and often agonizing phenomenon which many writers incorporate into their literature in order to unfold a personal understanding of death or to demonstrate the various roles which death can play. Writers typically use death as a motif to reinforce a theme hidden in the core of a story or an overarching truth pointing to the moral of the story. In August Wilsons’ Fences, the motif of death arguably acts as a character in the play. Death is repeatedly personified and metaphorically compared to baseball. The frequent presence of death as a character in the play reinforces the theme that death is an inevitable force.…
