Symbolism In The Perks Of Being A Wallflower

Improved Essays
The story takes place in the suburbs of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1991. It also takes place in school where Charlie meets his new friends that help him get through life. Another setting is in the tunnel. Charlie travels through the same tunnel three times in the book; the first and the third time were with his friends, Sam and Patrick. The second time Charlie was by himself, and he felt a little different. He said “ It was me standing up in that tunnel with over my face. Not caring if I saw downtown. Not even thinking about it. Because I was standing in the tunnel. And I was really there” (perks of being a wallflower book, Stephen Chbosky). And that was enough to make me feel infinite. The tunnel was like the symbolism of this book.

The setting of the story is important because young Mirada and her friends have to grow up in New York, where they have to walk home from school every day, and a crazy man standing on a street corner is not unusual. My favorite character from this book is Miranda, a young girl living with her mother in an apartment in New York. She is my favorite character because even though she does not have as many comforts as she would if her mom had more money she is still content with her lifestyle and surroundings.
