While you could think that the title was chosen because a main part of the story focuses on Troy and Cory building a fence, there is actually a lot of symbolism behind the “Fences” title. The fence takes a very long time to build, which causes tension between Cory and Troy as he gets angry that Cory is never around to help. This leads to Cory making a point that Troy isn’t getting anything done because he is always going to Taylors’ where he visits his mistress, Alberta (pg #). Troy ignores his responsibility to build the fence, just like he is ignoring his responsibility to his family and wife.…

The Things They Carried was a book filled with many different versions of symbolism. One of these symbols, Sh*t Field, has many different meanings. Such as, War in general is terrible, the Guilt suffered after war is toll taking, and its memory is something only the people who experienced it will understand. After the war Norman Bowker cannot stop driving around the lake of his home town, thinking about Kiowa(O’Brien, 131). Sunsets are a very unique way to capture the idea of similarities between two concepts. However, when relating to The Outsiders, by S.E. Hinton, it is completely normal; in fact, it makes total sense. The novel includes two gangs that were constantly after each other--and not in playful ways. They were very violent and were always willing to hurt the other side; they completely despised each other. Those two gangs were the Greasers and the Socs, and they lived on opposite sides of town: the East side and the West side.…

When a poet chooses the right word or collection of words, the reader is carried away into the world they are trying to create. The use of figurative language and imagery are elements of literature that give poets the opportunity to open doorways in the minds of those reading their literary works. They paint the picture, bring back the smells, and give the quiet pages sound. Such is true in the poems “The Lanyard” by Billy Collins and “A Song in the Front Yard” by Gwendolyn Brooks.…

The symbols in “The Matrix” enhanced how the movie was to be perceived, often of the difference between reality and an illusion. The most striking part of the main characters within the Matrix is their sunglasses, which are worn by those in the Nebuchadnezzar and the “agents”. These sunglasses, which cover their eyes (a symbol of understanding), symbolize their state of sleep or ignorance. As the crew, who are asleep, wear the sunglasses to represent sleeping and being in the matrix, the agents wear them as well – particularly Smith who hated the Matrix and wanted to be free by gaining knowledge. A symbol that directly portrays confusion is smoke, an ideal example is when the Oracle is seen smoking a cigarette.…

When reading 1984 by George Orwell, the first thing that becomes apparent is the near-omnipresent use of symbolism. By using symbolism throughout the novel, George Orwell paints a bleak future that could very well become a reality. From a totalitarian corrupt government to brainwashed citizens and surveillance that blankets the world, the dystopian future depicted in 1984 could easily become our future if we are not careful, and George Orwell wants to make sure that it doesn’t. By placing symbols throughout the book that warn of the perils of a dystopian future, Orwell did all he could to warn us of an unfortunate, yet possible reality.…
