Symbolism behind objects and their importance in describing Gregor, Grete and their relation The metamorphosis is a novel written by Franz Kafka and published in 1915. In this novel the author tells the story of Gregor Samsa, a travelling salesman who lived with his family, and sustained financially till the day we woke up to realize he had transformed into a "monstrous vermin" . Gregor ends up dying due to starvation and he is thrown to the garbage. The cause of death of Franz Kafka and the main character in this novella is particularly the same. This also shows Gregor`s love towards her sister and that they were very close. Their relation wasn´t a common one, the love that they had for each other (although might seem slightly controversial) almost trespassed the barriers of being just brother and sister(specially on how Gregor felt towards his sister). Gregor immensely enjoyed when Grete played the violin both in his human form as in his insect form. His biggest wish after being transformed into an insect was that his sister played some music for him, he dreamt with that moment. Sadly for him, it never happened. Although Grete loved him (at least in part one and the first and second part of the novella) she never played the violin for him, the reason was that she couldn´t stand seeing him or even staying much in the room because of the odor. This means that the physical transformation had a significant change in the ways Grete´s feelings operates towards Gregor. Back to the idea of the violin, it´s remarkable that in the first and second part of the story Grete plays the violin and is seen as just a girl; when she has to start to work and changes from the violin to a writer machine she is seen by her family as "blossomed into a good-looking and well-developed girl".
