Poe uses symbolism to further aid in the development of his short story, "The Masque of the Red Death." Since a deadly disease by the name of the Red Death is terrorizing where he lives, Prince Prospero decides to lock the gates of his palace to prevent the illness from spreading. Several months after he isolates himself from the rest of the world, he organizes a rather elegant masquerade ball, inviting a multitude of his fellow nobleman to participate in such an event. During the ball, Prince Prospero's guests become fascinated by the strange way in which his palace is structured.
