Symbolism In The Great Gatsby

F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Great Gatsby contains many different powerful meanings and symbolic diction to enforce it. One of the main characters, Gatsby, is a man filled with ambition and desire for his past love and emotions. However, his desire for the past becomes an obsession which becomes the center of his life and cannot seem to see it. Living the way Gatsby lives can cause you to fall behind the future and can cause a man to do whatever it takes to relive the past. Sadly, as much as Gatsby wants to relive his past, he never gets to fulfill his desire. Gatsby in the beginning of the novel seems to be well presented but, once Nick meets him he notices that Gatsby cannot stop talking about the past and seems to want Nick to know the “truth” about his …show more content…
Gatsby’s true past is not what he claims it to be. Nick soon figures out the Gatsby was James Gatz of North Dakota, born into a poor farm family. Gatsby wanted to make a name for himself that was “a son of God”. However, Gatsby assisted Dan Cody and almost earned his twenty-five thousand dollars but had the legal device used against him. During this time he had met the lovely Daisy, which she is a major contributor on how Gatsby is stuck in the past. The flung that Gatsby and Daisy had caused Gatsby to believe that they were going o be in live forever. This idea Gatsby had in his head that Daisy was going to wait for him to return to the war was imprinted into his brain. When Daisy went one of Gatsby’s Party he wanted her to tell her current husband Tom that she didn’t love him and that she and Gatsby can “go back to Louisville and be married from her house , just as if it were five years ago”. This evidence only proves that he wants her to have the same mindset that she had five years go
