The symbols in The Giver by author Lois Lowry help us greater comprehend the meanings she portrays in the novel. These symbols help us understand the individual characters and other plot elements in the novel, as well as the setting as well. The family unit cares for the child in their own dwelling. The Nurturing Center is a place where all new children are cared for during their development stages before being assigned their family units when they are in the age group of One in the Naming Ceremony, which takes place in December. However, Gabriel is growing at an alarmingly slow rate, according to the Nurturers’ observation, and the family is given permission to care for him until he is mature enough to go to a respective family unit. Gabriel is not maturing and gaining enough weight and strength, and the community’s Elders are talking about releasing him, which is the most sorrowful statement of failure for the Nurturers and community itself when a newchild is labeled “Inadequate” and released. Gabriel represents innocence because these factors of growth and maturity are in the Nurturers’ hands, not his own, and he cannot do anything about it since he is too young and is just a small newchild doing nothing
