Symbolism in the story consists of the House of Usher and the fungi and decaying of the house. To further explain, the House of Usher and the Usher twins are connected and what happens to the twins happens to the house. For example, “The deep and dank tarn at my feet closed sullenly and silently over the fragments of the “House of Usher.” This quote is from the narrator of the short story and it tells the reader that the house collapsed, but it fell right after both the twins died. Then the fungi and decaying of the house is a symbol and it represents Roderick’s and Madeline’s physical state. For example, when the narrator comes to the Usher’s house he notices that the house and the land surrounding. The house is with fungi and the land is decaying. Afterwards, the narrator enters the house and he notices that both of the twins are sick. Roderick is feeling ill and Madeline is ill, but with a sickness that no one is familiar with. The twins have a bond that is so extreme that their illness corresponds with the house’s
