To an individual love is a sensation of transforming rather than remaining stagnant – and this metamorphic emotion is not limited only to romantic love. The world revolves around a lot of platonic and self-love, too. Love is subtle, silent, and delicate; and in its beginnings it can be drowned out easily by attachment, fear, and especially lust. Love is powerful – powerful enough to shatter the dirty habits a person bears. Desire – or lust – is reckless. Desire is the intention to change, to reject what something is in favor of what could be – something better, perhaps something more pleasing. Yunior’s supposed love for his former girlfriend, Magda, is questionable. If Yunior did truly love Magda, he would not have cheated; however, the border between love and lust is blurred greatly in Yunior’s life. As a Dominican man he is predestined to be a “sucio” who is expected to cheat and commit wrongdoings in all of his relationships. Yunior shows an amazing capacity to document his infidelities and leave the record out in the open. His lust drives him to cheat on the love of his life, but on the same hand, his love for Magda also drives him to salvage his destroyed relationship by deleting his Facebook account, giving Magda all his email passwords, and even fantasizing that Magda will call him back. After facing the reality that Magda will never come back to him Yunior then begins to change his daily habits and commits to life-changing activities – he begins to run then resorts to yoga, and he then begins to write.
