Foremost, the almond tree represents itself as hope. During the story the characters need hope. When in need of this hope, they place themselves around the almond tree. Throughout the novel, the almond tree has to withstand the brutality of fires and other disasters, while also supporting Ichamd’s family. For instance, Ichmad recounts seeing, “ As the inferno (of their home) died down, I could see that … our two olive trees were on fire...then I noticed our almond tree, unharmed” (Corasanti 43). In a time where survival is imperative, the strength of the almond tree sheds light on the subject, that the continuation of life is possible in such times of prejudice. Ichmad said, “We saw smoke rising from the direction of our home” (Corasanti 106). Yet when he returns home the almond tree is safe and his family gathers around it. The almond tree is a victim of violence just like Ichmad’s family and yet stands strong, even to the end of the story. The almond tree simultaneously provides for the family, which helps them survive throughout Ichmad’s life. The family is “living on almond bread, almond butter, ... and almond soup”(Corasanti 77).
