Hamlet is seeking revenge for his father’s death by Claudius. Throughout the whole play he is considering taking action but is fought by the good angel on his shoulder not to take action. We can see this when he says “Now might I do it pat, now he is praying, And now I 'll do 't. [He draws his sword.} And so he goes to heaven, and so am I revenged. That would be scanned: A villain kills my father, and for that, I, his sole son, do this same villain send, to heaven.” This is an example of Hamlet considering killing Claudius but backing down. He is constantly torn between which angels on his shoulder he should listen to, in this case the good one. Hamlet’s reason for not killing Claudius is that Claudius at that moment was praying and Hamlet was worried that if he killed him then he would be sending his soul to heaven. This is the first time we can get a glimpse into what is going through Hamlet’s mind. He not only wants to seek revenge but he also wants him to suffer in hell like his father. Eventually Hamlet has his time to seek revenge but doesn’t realize that Laertes is seeking revenge on Hamlet in his involvement in his father’s death, Polonius, and ultimately the death of his sister Ophelia. Fortinbras is also seeking revenge during the play. Fortinbras wants revenge against Denmark because they defeated his father. Claudius is also seeking revenge against Hamlet for getting in the way on his path to the throne. He also feels like Hamlet is getting in the way of his future marriage.
