Halliday’s Easter Egg hunt. In the very beginning of the book Wade explains,
A new subculture was born, composed of the millions of people now devoted every free moment of their lives to searching for Halliday’s egg. At first, these individuals were known simply as ‘egg hunters,’ but this was quickly truncated to the nickname ‘gunters’. (Cline, pg.25)
Throughout the book, the word gunter is seen as a highly fashionable but then is turned into a ridicule after the first year of nothingness. In the novel, Wade is a gunter. It is used in the text when Morrow, Halliday’s best friend and co creator of OASIS, calls out the Sixers by saying,
“..IOI. The Sixers. Their sole purpose is to exploit loopholes in the contest rules and subvert the intention of Jim’s (Halliday) will. The very soul of the OASIS is at stake here. The last thing Jim would have wanted is for his creation to fall into the hands of a fascist multinational conglomerate like IOI.” (Cline, pg.118)
Just like Morrow said, Sixers are members of IOI who does anything even if it takes cheating, loopholes, and even murder. This plays a big part in the novel because Wade competes with these Sixers ever since he found the first key. The Sixers even tried to kill him by bombing his trailer.
