In the beginning of the story, Ran of Carnelaine does not seem to be in love with Amaranth. He provided two reasons for coming to the tower. First, because Carnelaine is needy, he came “to replenish its coffers” (McKillip 48). Second, when Amaranth asked Ran why do men keep coming to the tower, he answered, “The riddle itself. That draws us all, at heart. What is the most precious thing? To see it, to hold it, above all to recognize it and choose it – that’s what keeps us coming and traps you here” (McKillip 50). Initially, these reasons made me think that he is eager to come to the tower only out of necessity and curiosity.
