Symbolism in novels can show you what’s really hiding in between the lines. In George Orwell’s “1984” and Allan Moores’ “V for Vendetta”, they both contain points of symbolism that are similar and different to each other. From V’s assortment of roses and Winston’s glass paperweight, these symbols have a major role in the story by affecting the characters, setting, and other elements. The symbols also affect the theme(s) which overall can change the book’s meaning. In Orwell's "1984," Winston sees posters everywhere that show a man with the words "BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU." The corruption of government is another factor of symbolism. The Ministry of Truth lied about the wars between Oceania and Eurasia and Norsefire created the virus to gain more supporters. These abundance of symbols throughout these novels result in similar themes. The theme of both novels is being rebellious and living in a totalitarianism government. Both, Winston and V go against the law to do what they feel is right. This makes them feel like a free citizen and they gain some supporters as they ‘do their deed’ throughout the story. These main characters learn not to be afraid to stand up against their government and their own right for freedom and speech. Also, both characters live a dystopia where the government is a danger to them because of constant monitoring and the use of certain techniques to control their citizens. With the abundance of symbols and themes, both novels are similar to one another. These two authors use different symbols to explore similar ideas within the story so readers can read in between the lines.
