Throughout history, certain items have been used to portray an idea of sorts. These are representations of other items or thoughts based on the time period, and can differ from physical to imaginary motif. Items like this are known as symbols, and hold deep meaning in every text or thought. For example, the crucifix is a large detail for Christians and their religion. Some symbols represent an idea (such as the aforementioned crucifix) or a physical state of being, such as a snake representing the House of Slytherin from the novels Harry Potter, by J.K. Rowling. However, symbolism doesn't just resemble an item that one may wear willingly, but also includes those of which cannot be taken off. Anything from a scar to a stain can resemble a permanent symbol. Nathaniel Hawthorne proves this within one of his greatest novels. Throughout the text, the symbol of a red "A" becomes evidently more important as the plot line progresses.
