Symbolism In My Antonia, By Willa Cather

In My Antonia, Cather uses symbols from nature to express the essential aspects of the lives of the characters. Some symbols are of the land: the prairie, the grass, winter, etc. Other symbols are animals: badgers, wolves, rattlesnakes, larks, etc. Choose three symbols and discuss how they convey information about the daily lives of the characters, how the characters relate to each other and/or how Cather views life.

In My Antonia, by Willa Cather, there are multiple examples of symbolism. Mr. Shimerda’s Grave, the plough, and light are all physical things mentioned throughout the story that represent different things.
Mr. Shimerda’s grave symbolizes the times of the prairie when it was at its best, and also Antonia and Jim’s longing for

When Jim sees Antonia for the first time he says, “her eyes are like the sun” and that her cheeks are glowing. As Jim and Antonia’s childhoods come to an end, they watch the lightning from a storm together on a roof at the end of book one. At the end, when Jim leaves Antonia for good, he wanders the prairie roads in the “slanting sunlight”, reflecting on his past without Antonia. “As I went alone over that familiar road, I could almost believe that a boy and girl ran along beside me, as our shadows used in to do, laughing and whispering to each other in the grass.” (Cather, Book 4, Chapter 4). The symbolism between the light and Jim and Antonia’s relationship is supported here because as he ponders the past while walking the roads of the prairie, he sees a shadow that reminds him of his days with …show more content…
While it is said that Jim was supposed to teach Antonia, as stated in the text, “He placed this book in my grandmother's hands, looked at her entreatingly, and said with an earnestness which I shall never forget, "Te-e-ach, te-e-ach my Án-tonia!"’ (Cather, Book 1, Chapter 3), I believe they both learned equally from each other.
An example of when Jim teaches Antonia is where Jim kills the snake, this teaches Antonia bravery and courage. I believe Antonia becomes such a powerful woman because she saw Jim do this. “I never know you was so brave, Jim,” she went on comfortingly. “You is just like big mans; you wait for him lift his head and then you go for him. Ain’t you feel scared a bit? Now we take that snake home and show everybody. Nobody ain’t seen in this kawn-tree so big snake like you kill.” (Cather, Book 1, Chapter VII).
A time when Antonia teaches Jim is when he realizes the multiple traits Antonia possesses such as strength, imagination, and power. He becomes inspired by these traits and uses them in life to be a better

Throughout the first reading assignment for My Ántonia Willa Cather uses vivid imagery to accentuate Jim Burden’s journey. The first signs of imagery are noted in the introduction where an unknown narrator describes the Nebraskan fields as “never-ending miles of ripe wheat.” There, under the “burning summers when the world lies green and billowy beneath a brilliant sky,” Burden’s childhood rears his love for the great country and he soon begins “to lose himself in those big Western dreams.” He later becomes a lawyer for the railroads, retaining his “fresh color and sandy hair and quick-changing eyes.” The imagery is carried through into the first four sections of the first book.…

In the novel “My Antonia” by Willa Cather, it is debatable whether characters Jim or Antonia learned more throughout their relationship. Personally, I believe that Jim learned more throughout their relationship. Considering that Jim is the narrator of the story, we get to see his inner thoughts, and never have confirmation of Antonia’s feelings, we just know what Jim thinks she has learned. Most first-person narrators can be considered unreliable, because we will never be certain on the feelings and thoughts of other characters. We are experiencing Jim’s story in the novel.…

Another quote that shows how Antonia benefited from her relationship with Jim is " Antonia loved to help grandmother in the kitchen and learn about cooking and housekeeping. she would stand beside her, watching her every movement. We were willing to believe that Mrs. Shimerda was a good housewife in her own country, but she managed poorly under new conditions: the condition were bad enough, certainly!". One more quote that let's the reader know Antonia learning from Jim is, "Antonia had opinions about everything, and she was soon able to make them known. Almost everyday she came running across the prairie to have her reading lesson with me".…

Using symbols in stories creates a mood or emotion to try and represent something else of a character, a situation, or an object. “A dead cucumber-vine dangled from the porch like the drape streamer tied to the door for a death, and the thought flashed through Ethan's brain: “ If it was there for Zeena—“ (Wharton, 45). The dead cucumber-vine metaphorically represents the death of Zeena who might get taken away eventually by her ailement. It almost seems as if Ethan desperately wants for Zeena to die. Her lingering presence in the house does nothing but bring an eerie dread within the household.…

However, they both break society's norms. Both Jim and Ántonia have very strong emotions, but while Ántonia won't face them, Jim embraces them which, once again, defy society's norms. He is very indecisive about many things, but mostly about how he feels about Ántonia. He is passive but is also sensitive, and sensitivity is something that Ántonia can sometimes lack.…

Ántonia’s spirit made an impact on Jim, causing him to return to visit her as an adult. “I told Ántonia I would come back, but life intervened, and it was twenty years before I kept my promise” (My Ántonia 175). Life is personified to intervene, and given as a reason for why Jim was unable to return and visit Ántonia. Ántonia was so important to Jim because of her success, that he made a point of returning to visit her. “Not only the progenitor of a large, vigorous family, she is also the source of the fertility and energy that have transformed the barren Nebraska prairie into a rich and fruitful garden” (Lambert 46).…

The romantic side of Jim’s personality is shown through their moments together; Jim often idealizes Antonia and becomes dismayed when she makes mistakes. Afraid to see the elderly Antonia, he keeps his distance for twenty years, wanting to preserve the young and innocent girl he remembered so fondly. Furthermore, Cather writes of another perplexing relationship in Jim’s childhood; his relationship with Lena Lingard. Lena and Ántonia are as different as night and day, yet Jim forms similar relationships with them. For example, Jim grows to love both girls; his love for Ántonia stems from friendship, but his love for Lena has no previous history.…

For instance, in “Good Man Is Hard to Find” she uses many different types of symbolism either related a general idea or a religious idea. “They passed a large cotton field with five or six graves fenced in the middle of it, like a small island” (O’Connor 712). This symbolizes that a tragic event is going to take place, due to the fact that there are six people in Bailey’s family, and there are six graves in the cotton field. This is also foreshadowing that keeps the readers engaged. Another symbolism in the story is “There was not a cloud in the sky nor any sun” (O’Connor 720).…

He only knew what she wanted him to know and that’s what he wrote down in this book. And maybe that’s true for all of the book, not just the ending. There is always risk of self aggrandizing when it comes to having a first person narrative because the author knows all that has happened and all that will happen and with Jim perhaps he wanted to seem more heroic and so he made life in Nebraska seem more dramatic than it actually was and made Antonia's life seem more dull and heartbreaking than it really…

Willa Cather’s O Pioneers! tells the gripping tale of Alexandra, a farmer on the Nebraska plains and her ordeals as she faces obstacles with her farm life and personal life. The novel expands into further character plots, however, specifically that of Emil and Marie, Alexandra’s brother and his married love interest, respectively. Ending in tragedy, Cather memorializes them with this passage: “But the stained, slippery grass, the darkened mulberries, told only half the story. Above Marie and Emil, two white butterflies from Frank’s alfalfa-field were fluttering in and out among the interlacing shadows; diving and soaring, now close together, now far apart; and in the long grass by the fence the last wild roses of the year opened their pink…
