Symbolism In Mawr's 'Dayseye'

Being a part of Dayseye means the world to me. Throughout elementary and middle school, I was very involved in music related activities from playing orff instruments to being in clubs where we would learn about Broadway music. So when I first saw Dayseye perform, I knew that this was where I wanted to be one day. As mentioned in Bryn Mawr’s newsletters from 1981 and 1982, a lot of pride can come from being in Dayseye. Every part of the name is symbolic. Many would guess that Bryn Mawr’s symbol, the daisy would represent just innocence and youth, but it is more than that. It comes from the Old English dægesege, from dæges eage "day's eye," since the daisy would rise with the sun and follow it through the day. In other interpretations, the daisy can symbolize a miniature version of the sun since some suggest …show more content…
Bishop stressed versatility with the songs they worked on. They didn’t want to be tied down to a certain musical style. So, their repertoire ranged from “barbershop to folk songs to 50’s-type popular music.” At first, it is possible that none of them thought they would be asked to perform at events and that they would remain a casual singing group, but due to their enthusiasm and energy, they were able to make a bold statement. All of these young women were able to resemble the daisy flower. In Roman mythology through various stories, the daisy represents transformation and resilience. Along with those meanings, as a sun symbol, the daisy can represent energy, clarity, truth, and cheer. In addition, some of its astrological meanings involve patience, persistence, and quiet strength. When I think about these qualities, I can see myself in the daisy. I value persistence especially when it comes to finding clarity in something. I also believe that if you truly want something or have the passion for it, you should be resilient in order to accomplish your

Today, sex is a much talked about subject, and roughly half of high school students participate in the act. Today the value of ‘saving one’s self for marriage’ is dated and carried out by few, but in ‘The Chrysanthemums’ by John Steinbeck, this ideal is presented to an extreme. Steinbeck begins the story by painting a descriptive picture of the Salinas Valley and describes it as “a time of quiet and waiting”. The story then introduces us to two of the main characters, Elisa and her husband, whose first interaction can best be described as awkward and curt . When her husband leaves, a tinker drives up to Elisas’ estate.…

The novel A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah have many different symbols placed throughout the book. The 3 main ones I found were his rap cassette, his shoes, and the moon. The rap cassette is a huge part of the novel. The cassette represents his childhood and playfulness as his keeps it in his pocket even though he doesn’t have a tape player with him until he becomes a soldier. Later on in the novel we see when Beah joins the army, the cassette is burned by the soldiers, and with it goes his childhood.…

In the novel Moo, Jane Smiley uses Dean Nils Harstad, Marly Hellmich, Dr. Gift, and Chairman X to emphasize how, when there is a conflict between personal belief systems and workplace practices, individuals will sacrifice their morals to reduce the amount of time or effort required to achieve their professional or personal goals. The belief systems discussed can be either religiously, politically, or economically centered. Using religious symbolism, Smiley utilizes the sacrificed beliefs of the above characters to symbolize how when administrators and educators take shortcuts to line their pockets, the American education system suffers. Dean Nils Harstad is the prime example of a character who takes harmful shortcuts, as his interactions…

MODULE B: PERFORMANCE TASK BY LAURA SHANAHAN For this task, I have chosen Act 4 Scene 5: Ophelia’s breakdown. This scene is significant as it provides the motivation for Laertes’ revenge and the audience’s reflection. In this, the court is exposed to Ophelia’s madness as the result of their selfish manipulations. This is perhaps one of the few sombre scenes within the entire play that allows both the characters and the audience to reflect upon the consequences of their actions.…

How does Spiegelman’s use of contrasting shading methods, specific metaphors, and vivid symbolism in Maus show not only the views of the Nazis of the Jews, but how the Jews ended up viewing themselves. Spiegelman’s use of shading portrays the loss of identity, sets the scene, and shows the guilt that Valdek felt during and after the Holocaust. On pages 51, 55, and 58, Spiegelman uses the pattern of prison stripes on the faces of the mice to portray a sense of loss of individuality. It is normal for the clothes of prisoners to have stripes on them, but when Spiegelman expands that pattern onto the full bodies of the Jews, it makes the reader understand the sense of lost individuality the Jews felt since the reader can’t tell the mice apart from…

Two main symbols stand out: the riding hood and the wolves. The riding hood represents the girl, her emotions toward the wolf, and the emotions of girls before her. Carter states, “She closed the window on the wolves and took off her scarlet shawl, the colour of poppies, the colour of sacrifices, the colour of her menses, and, since her fear did her no good, she ceased to be afraid” (117). Along with sacrifices, poppies are their own grave symbol. Greek and Roman myths often use poppies as flowers for the dead, and using poppies here may symbolize the death of the young girl’s innocence and any trepidation she would have toward the wolf.…

The short story portrays how “Ike’s childhood is structured on the promise and then the reality, of the participating in the autumnal hunt in the big woods” ultimately to capture the bear named Old Ben (Anna Priddy Go Down, Moses). Through symbolism, characterization, and imagery, William Faulkner proves that one should not let opposing views alter his thinking. Within “The Bear,” Faulkner uses symbolism to show how Ike has grown as a character and how he does not let the views of others change what he believes.…
