“When We Wake” by Karen Healey, is a science fiction book about the world in 2128 AD. The book covers many topics from cryogenics and no migrant policies to environmental destruction. The main character, Tegan Oglietti, has to face the many problems of the future, while being threatened by groups such as the Inheritors of the Earth. The book has so many cultural and social details about Australia in 2128 AD, that it was easy to make a book cover full of symbolism for the book. From the cover picture to the author’s biography, everything on the book jacket I created has a purpose.
The cover picture’s symbolism encompasses the entire book. It has deep and meaningful concepts, but is also easy to understand after reading the book. For example, the sign, with two bullet holes that holds the name of the title and author, represents two things. First, it symbolizes the end chapter 1. At this

The information for the summary was taken mainly from the first chapter. This technique of using information from only the beginning of the book is helpful to not ruin a book and disappoint the audience at the end of the story. It makes each new chapter more suspenseful because the readers don’t know what will happen next. The reviews used keywords that played up the book. It adds an honest opinion that the audience will admire and trust.
The book was chosen to be represented in the ways noted above, to draw in an audience and represent the whole book. Not only is the information for the summary and reviews worded carefully to capture the audience’s attention, but the colors for the picture will draw the eye of any bookworm nearby. The readers should enjoy trying to discover the meaning behind the cover image. Therefore, the audience will have no choice, except to curl up in an arm-chair and spend the next 48 hours lost in the book know as “When We

In The Devil in the White City, the events of the World’s Fair in Chicago are recounted in stunning clarity, hearing about the architects involved and their own personal journeys. From the beginning as well, the readers are informed about H. H. Holmes, the serial killer who resided at the Fair’s doorstep. Since the killer’s identity is already spoiled for the audience, Erik Larson is forced to resort to other means of captivating his readers and holding them in suspense. Throughout Larson’s novel, he uses simple literary tactics to achieve his goals. While detailing the architects’ journeys to building the Fair, Larson uses less suspense in the beginning, as nothing is in need of it, but as he keeps writing and the architects’ lives begin…

Picture books have been around for a long time. They have been read by many generations as a source of pleasure reading and to tap into their imagination. In these books, the writers and illustrator include various language, narrative and visual conventions to appeal to the reader and make them read with a deeper analytical eye to find the intended meaning. While some picture books are simple and the meaning is straightforward others are more complex and metaphorical. An example of such a picture book is Gary Crew and Steven Woolman’s…

Symbolism is used throughout “The Book Thief” as a way to represent the situation of World War II in Nazi Germany. Mark Zusak uses books, an accordion, and bread as symbols to represent the conformity or defiance of each character in “The Book Thief.” Quote: "In fact, on April 20 – the Furher’s birthday – when she snatched that book from beneath the steaming heap of ashes, Liesel was a girl made out of darkness." (Page 84). When Liesel steals the book from the fire, books are turned into the symbol of thievery and defiance against the Nazi Party and Hitler.…

Layers of Fiction Symbolism is represented by levels of pragmatic and figurative meaning. As an example, in “The Yellow Wallpaper,” Gilman incorporates the very wallpaper to represent this idea. The wallpaper displays more than just symbolism; it also shows the time period and theme of the story. These elements of fiction are also supported by the first person narration in helping the reader understand and analyze the text. This combination helps to show the relationships of the protagonist, overall setting, and theme of the story.…

What intrigued most about 1984 is the symbolism it held. This is why I wanted to recreate a book cover that held a great amount of symbolism and a visual art piece that channels the many themes explored within the text. When writing 1984, I believe George Orwell’s style of writing and point in conveying actions were quite distinctive. His syntax gave off a tone of hopelessness and warning. A slow and fearful journey we follow Winston through that book…
