Symbolism In Good Country People

In the O’Connor’s Story “Good Country People” there are two religious symbols used. One of the most prominent symbols is the Bible, which is a very universal symbol for multiple religions, but the story uses the bible to symbolize the Christian religion. The Christian’s believe that their higher power is “God”. The other religious symbol is less prominent because there is no true symbol for Atheist. The story uses the science book that Joy (Hulga) was reading to represent the Atheist, who does not believe in a god or a higher power. They believe mostly in what they see. I believe they wanted to include religious symbols in the short story as a foundation to what was going to occur. In the story the Bible salesman comes across as a good country person and convinces the all of his good nature. He even convinces Hulga that he was a kind good country boy. Later in the story we learn that the good country boy that we thought the Bible salesman was happened to be just an act. Pointer never believed in the Bible …show more content…
I believe Joy changed her name as a defense mechanism to protect herself. If she was able to take away all the hope and good from her life, then that would mean that no one would be able to take from her and no one could hurt her. This change and recreation of Joy to Hulga was to protect her, but in the story Manly Pointer managed to penetrate her walls and bring them down to take her wooden leg. This tragedy will add to Hulga’s mistrust in the world. Manly Pointer left Hulga vulnerable and victimized she no longer was this woman who was very harsh to another and without emotion, no longer feeling educated and superior to others. She was once again the little girl who lost her leg, scarred and unable to do

Flannery O’Connor is an astounding, but strange modern American writer from Milledgeville that deepens her Christian vision throughout her works. She often engages her personal beliefs into the lives of her characters in her writings. The main characters in “A Good Man is Hard to Find”, “Revelation”, and “Parker’s Back” all portray O’Connor’s belief as a Roman Catholic. All of the characters between the three stories are conceptually related and play similar roles in their particular stories. Hey Snodgrass How are you?…

Throughout this unit, I saw a trend in early American writings that incorporated the ideals and values of religion. The theme that these writings have in common is the importance of individualism by utilizing religion to justify ones actions and the belief in a greater meaning such as God and Christianity. For example in William Bradford’s Plymouth Plantation he talks about using God as a compass of sorts to look to for guidance. In this quote from Plymouth Plantation “to keep a good conscience, and walk in such a way as God has prescribed in his word, is a thing which I must prefer before you all and above itself.”…

Lowis Lowry is an excellent writer of subtly hinting at something like current federal policies and laws, the most major thing being Christianity. Christian symbolism is important to the book because it spreads the word and true meaning of God to those who do not believe in him. Lowis Lowry wanted to get the word of the lord out to those who reject his presence. She did this because God has a great message of loving your neighbor and some people who choose to ignore the presence of God do not believe this and Lois Lowry wants them to hear these messages through subtly hinting at them through her novel The Giver. Readers see Christian symbolism through the names of the main characters like Jonas, the journey of Jonas and Gabriel being like Jesus’…

Many people see deeper than what is seen on the surface. They have something in life that means more to them than what others see. These people decide to not judge a book by it’s cover. Joy is a feeling of happiness but if you're always depressed and bothered than that’s not the right feeling for you. Having change her birth name to Hulga described her personality and what she thought of herself. For example, she felt ugly because her leg, bad heart she was too self-conscious about her outward image. A name is something a person identifies with and becomes that persons own brand. The Subjective Nature of Morality Former president of the United States, Abraham Lincoln, once said “we can complain because rose bushes have thorns, or rejoice because thorn bushes have roses”. In essence, Abraham Lincoln stated that life is all about perspective and subjectivity. This idea of difference in perspective can be applied to many aspects in life including morality and ethics. The idea that morality is subjective is explored in the literary work, “No Country for Old Men” (“NCOM”) written by Cormac McCarthy, as well as the play King Lear, written by William Shakespeare. Both pieces of literature apply similar techniques to teach readers this lesson.…

The song, “Viva la Vida”, by the British band Coldplay represents the beginning of the story, Anthem, by Ayn Rand and protagonist Equality 7-2521’s hopes to become a Scholar and the misery he faces with being chosen as a Street Sweeper. In the song, Equality says that everyone is else is equal besides “we, Equality 7-2521, who were born with a curse” (20). By aspiring to become a Scholar when he is fifteen, this future rebel desires to break his sui generis curse and start a new life. He mentions that the dark-age “modern” technology of his dimension comes from the government-appointed Scholars, such as “how to make candles from wax and string; also, how to make glass” (24). Unique among others, he wants to revive the technology prior to the…

Everyone is united for one reason or the other, yet people still manage to alienate other human beings due to the color of their skin, physical appearances or the religion they do or don’t believe in. Citizens being ethnically diverse is an excuse to make others feel left out or treated inadequately in society. Grant was an African-American man who got a decent education but was still treated less than the average white man, it also did not help that he did not think of religion to be as important as the rest. The start of Grant being involved into the society is because what happened to a young African-American man named Jefferson, he was accused of first degree murder and guilty of robbery.…

Nonetheless, O’Connor does an impressive work displaying that humankind only thinks of God when they are in need or are willing to use the name of God to achieve their motive. The trait of giving the non-deserving people the religious belief is also displayed in another short story of Flannery O’Connor “Parker’s back.” Parker has always stayed away from any religious involvement, however when he is stuck in an accident which almost killed him, he goes above and beyond to get a tattoo of Christ with eyes on his back. Parker had never believed…

In Alan Paton’s Cry the Beloved Country, three books depict the separation between the blacks and the whites, and use the land to exemplify the interactions between the two races. Paton’s use of symbols and metaphors connected to the land, convey the tarnished social and human conditions displayed throughout the book. In this portion of the book, the most prominent metaphor of the land is how it becomes more barren and lifeless because the natives leave the countryside for the more prosperous land, Johannesburg. The land expresses the tradition of the natives.…
