Throughout “Queries of Unrest”, Smith uses many literary terms like repetition to get his message of the poem out. For example, he uses “Maybe”, “darkness”, “scared”, and “cry for help” many times in his poem. When he uses these words and phrases he uses them to express doubt and fear about his life and what he’s supposed to be doing with it. The use of repetition effectively gets his message across because he’s repeatedly telling the readers about the dark frightful unsureness he’s going through. However, in the poem“Making a Fist”, the author doesn’t use any repetition. This made the poem hard to understand. Meaning, his lack of repetition caused the message of the poem not to be as effective. He doubts himself in some parts of the poem, for instance he says he thinks people wont think of his poem as a poem but as a cry for help instead, but that’s not what he wants it to be. He later questions the thought and says ‘Maybe the poem is a cry for help.” Most poets are confident in their writing, especially if they're good at it, so they use as an outlet for an easier way to share their feelings. In this specific poem he happens to be talking about his life long feeling of being a black male and how Smith wonders if he falls under the stereotype. He uses this poem to express is uncertain feeling of how others petrey him and his race/gender.
