In City of Ember, Lina symbolizes hope. The symbol of hope occurs when Lina figures out that the piece of crumpled paper might be the way out of Ember. For example, Du Prau writes, “She had found something strange and important: instructions for something. But for what?”(). By looking at this quotation, we can see how hopeful Lina gets when she thinks she found an exit out of ember. Despite her doubting, Lina still tried to figure out what the instructions meant, because she belived that there was a way out and she would find it. This supports my quote b/ Lina had such a desire to find the way out, this statement displays how Lina, throughout the whole story, carries hope with her and tries to give it to everyone else.
