The book I read was The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. This book takes place in Germany 1942, it is a Holocaust story which is never easy to read. The book starts with our main character Bruno coming home from school and seeing his family maid packing up all his belongings. We later find out that Bruno’s family is going to move to a new home after Hitler promotes Bruno's father. Bruno comes from a family of wealth and is unhappy with his new living arrangement. Bruno has no idea he lives near an Auschwitz death camp. While exploring one day Bruno meets a Jewish boy names Shmuel at the fence of the death camp. He befriends Shmuel, visits him daily, and even sneaks food in for him.Bruno talks to Shmuel every day, sometimes complain about luxuries …show more content…
One theme is Innocence. Bruno does not know much about the war and what's going on in Germany with the Nazis, after all, he's only eight (nine at the end) and a child's mind is as pure as can be before its exposed to the evilness of the world. The first quote shows come when Bruno’s dad calls him into his office and says Bruno forgot something.Bruno then enters the room and does a Nazi salute followed with a “Heil Hitler” The quote reads “ ‘Heil Hitler,’ he said, which he presumed was another way of saying ‘well, goodbye, for now, have a pleasant afternoon.’ (p.54) ”. All the adults in Bruno’s life always give him vague explanations of anything regarding their new home and the camp. Such as the way his father said the people at The Camp weren't people at all. he makes the Jews and concentration camps sound like they just have nothing to do with Bruno but what Bruno doesn't know is that the Nazis murder Jews and minorities because they see them as less and that's what Bruno's father meant when he said they aren't people because Bruno's father sees minorities and Jews as less Bruno's father teaches Bruno the Nazi salute without teaching him it is a symbol of obedience to Hitler. It does not mean that there is anything wrong with Bruno it just the nationalism of the Germans back then. The next quote comes from chapter 10 after Bruno first sees Shmuel “Bruno was sure he had never seen a skinnier or sadder …show more content…
At first, he just thinks of Pavel and Maria as just the people that work at his house but then, he realizes they are people with lives and feelings this later translates over to the way he feels love and compassion for Shmuel. Throughout the book, Bruno becomes less Selfish and is more aware of what's going on around him. A moment of Bruno losing his childish naivety and Innocence is when Gretel is telling the maid to run her a bath. “ ‘why can’t you run your own bath snapped?’ Bruno. ‘Because she's the maid that's what she's here to do’ said Gretel staring at him. ‘Thats what she's here for.’ ‘That's not what she's here for.’ shouted Bruno standing up and marching over to her. ‘She’s not just here to do things for us all the time, you know especially things we can do ourselves’ ”. Even though Gretel is older than Bruno and tries acting more mature than Bruno we still see that she doesn't feel the compassion Bruno now feels for the maid working at his house. The other Employee working for Bruno's family is Pavel, Pavel is a Jew and works as the family Butler. Before being taken from his home he used to be a doctor. One day when Bruno scrapes his knee Pavel bandages him up but mother said she did it. This significance was to avoid father getting angry that a jew was bandaging his son's knee. Father and Lieutenant Kotler both beat Pavel. On one occasion Lieutenant Kotler beats him right

In addition, during the process of Bruno’s families move out of Germany to Out-With, Bruno has more thoughts about how evil his sister is, “Bruno was sure that it would have made a lot more sense if they had left Gretel behind in Berlin to look after the house because she was nothing but trouble. In fact he had heard her described on any number of occasions as being Trouble From Day One”(Boyne 15). The purpose of this quote is to use imagery to display how not only Bruno sees his sister as being trouble but others see her in the same way. This means that she does not have the same kind loving traits Katniss and Peter constantly display as older siblings, which is why Bruno dislikes her so much. This dislike towards his sister is the result of her negative behaviour towards him, and is why he acts the way that he does.…
