Fat Charlie In Anansi Boys

Humans are fundamentally different than any other existing organism, not only because of the obvious diversity in physical form, but also because of the uniqueness humans have from each other. Our important features are our foundation as who we are as individuals, and the assortment of personalities set us apart from one another. As Neil Gaiman, author of the novel Anansi Boys, inspires us by writing, “Each person who ever was or is or will be has a song. It isn't a song that anybody else wrote. It has its own melody, it has its own words” (164). At the beginning of the book, the distinct difference between Spider and Fat Charlie is quite obvious, but as the plot progresses, we are allowed an insight to see what Spider’s song is and how his nature develops into something entirely new through his personal growth to becoming more human and more similar to Fat Charlie. He has never felt any emotions that require great depth such as love, guilt, or suffering. Gaiman effectively exhibits Spider’s evolution of character through his own self discoveries. After invading Fat Charlie’s life, Spider has finally realized that even gods are not invincible. As an effect of this, he is not as self- assured as he was beforehand which allows doubt of the morality of his actions and guilt into his life. His newfound conscience gives him the ability to recognize that Rosie is not like other women and results in him falling in love for the first and last time. The dynamics of Spider’s life have made a huge impact on his perception of the world and the way he is able to emote slightly transforming him to become more like Fat Charlie. It is all a part of his own unique song.
