In the book An Enchantment of Ravens by Margaret Rogerson, Isobel paints portraits. But she doesn’t paint portraits for just anybody, she paints portraits for Fair Folk, and in return they cast enchantments which Isobel uses to help her family. But when she paints human emotions on a very esteemed creature in the Autumn Court, she gets kidnapped and sent through an adventure, and she ends up falling in love, which could be the death of both her and the one she fell for. While in Life and Death by Stephenie Meyer, Beaufort (Beau) moves to Seattle, only to find himself swept up in a mystery and an adventure. While he’s crushing on the mysterious Edythe, he wants to find out what she is, and more about her. But in the process he puts himself in danger, and almost dies, but Edythe keeps him alive because she cares about him too. Though these two books are very different, they do have similarities, while the differences are there as well. Some of the most important similarities and differences in these two books though are how symbolism works, how the theme(s) work, and how the conflicts play out. In both An Enchantment of Ravens and Life and Death, symbolism shows up, but works in different ways. In An Enchantment of Ravens a symbol that shows itself is the raven pin that Rook always carries around with him. “He wore it still, though the pin’s tarnish and antique craftsmanship gave it away as two or three hundred years old.” (page 106).
