Analysis: All Quiet On The Western Front

World War І, a war that began in 1914 and lasted until 1918, was often referred to as the “total war” due to its immense effect on the countries, through and even after the war. There were many events that lead to this atrocious battle, such as the competition to prove a sense of nationalism, mutual defense alliances, military establishment and many other triggers. In addition to the countries, it is important to note that there were also many immediate consequences on the soldiers of the war as well, as shown in All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque. This pair of boots is a great symbol throughout the course of the book because it shows how the soldiers begin to adapt to the war, as they have lost a sense of humanity and at this point only seek to survive the war. Consequently, throughout the novel, there are many instances that demonstrate how the young men adapt to several new and dissimilar ways that allow them to comprehend and see the war from a soldier’s perspective rather than their own. After Germany lost the war in 1918, the French and the British sought to momentously punish the Germans in a way that they will no longer have the authority to fight again. Hence, in 1919, the Germans were forced to sign the Treaty of Versailles, in which officially ended the state of war between Germany and the opposing allied powers. As a result of the treaty, Germany had to give its land to the French, minimize their army, and most importantly, also pay the reparations for the total cost of the
