A Prayer For Owen Meany by John Irving, tells the extraordinary story of the walking miracle, Owen Meany and his friendship with John Wheelwright. John met Owen because he was the “runt” of their little league team. One tragic day, Owen hits a foul ball which strikes and kills John’s mother. Owen helps John with coping and grieving, which brings them closer together and they form an unbreakable bond. Together they learn life lessons, test their friendship, and discover new things about themselves as they grow. “Signs” directed by M. Shayamalan, tells the story of former reverend and farmer, Graham Hess. After crop circles appear outside of his home one day, him and his brother Merrill attempt to investigate. Examples that demonstrated that motif in, A Prayer For Owen Meany, were, Tabitha’s death. Although her death was caused by a baseball hit by Owen, he tells John that eventually they have to cope with it because, “Everything happens for a reason, and only God has the answers to why”. Another example is when John finds out Reverend Merrill is his biological father. After Owen’s death, the spirit of Owen possesses Merrill’s body and shows him the baseball that caused Tabitha’s death in Merrill’s desk. John finding out about Merrill being his father demonstrated the, “Everything happens for a reason” motif. “Signs” also had many examples of the motif as well. When Graham’s wife was dying, she told him that, “Everything happens for a reason.” and it was, “Meant to be” as in her death. Also the aliens invading happened for a reason and although that reason is unknown, it brought Graham’s family closer than ever since the mom’s death.
