People have different perspective on what they truly consider as heritage. Some actually consider the heritage to be something to preserve and show off, on contrary to others who believe to preserve them best when, put into ‘everyday use’. In Alice Walker’s “Everyday Use”, author uses symbolism, external and internal conflicts to compare weak women to a Strong woman’s identities, and their perception on what a heritage is, and portray the object of jealousy among family members. The story also, puts some light on the change taking place in African American women’s life in her era in subject to Dee’s character being the change and the character of Mama trying to resist the change, and following the traditional life and practices. The narrator informs, readers the ways she and her younger daughter Maggie is different from her other daughter, Dee in reference to looks and perceptions on what they actually consider to be a heritage.
