Objects, problems, places, words, or names are symbols that authors use to symbolize qualities which is different from their literal meaning. They are demonstrated by a specific implication that is defined by the context which they are used in. Symbolism is very important in “Once Upon a Time.” The symbols in this story help the theme achieve it’s purpose. The writer lets fear come over her and leads her to a direction where she begins to tell herself a story about fear. The family in the story is obsessed with having security. The wall they built is a symbol of isolation which creates a prison for themselves. The dragon’s teeth symbolizes danger that is slowly crawling to the family and kills the son. The cat symbolizes the things that are hidden, the unconscious. The cat knows to look before it leaps which the parents didn’t see the consequences of them having dangerous security. The son symbolizes their future, if they continue with their obsession, then they are going to die themselves which they are trying to get away from. Symbols plays an important role in making the short story more effective towards the audience. The wall …show more content…
As the family’s paranoia builds up, they put more and more dangerous security in their home. They ignored the consequences which killed their son. The wall symbolizes isolation that creates a prison for themselves and later isn’t good enough for them, so they put dragon’s teeth which symbolizes danger. That danger crawls up to them and creates more fear in their home after the death of the son. The cat can sense danger when it’s there and knows to be cautious, and humans usually tend to ignore danger because they believed that if they ignore it, then it’ll go away. The son symbolizes the parents’ future and they are going to die for their own safety. These symbols create the qualities of fear and what it does to us when we let overcome
