Symbolism In Mrs. Mallard's The Story Of An Hour

Improved Essays
Symbolism is something or an object that represents someone or something, it’s important to some people. To people the symbolism and signs that represent things are the key to their happiness. When someone dies or is gone, they get or use a symbol to appear as a butterfly, tiger, or any animal or sign to appear as that person. Irony is something when you don’t expect the expected. For example, in the short story of “The Story of an Hour” when Mrs. Mallard realizes that she is free and walks downstairs she sees her husband walk in and her heart stops and she dies.

In the short story, Richards, which is Brentley Mallard’s friend, told Mrs. Mallard that her husband had just died and her sister tries to comfort her while going upstairs.

“It’s no accident that this light appears in the west. Now that end seems full of hope” It was a coincidence that the light shown at her through the window, she was free from everything, nothing could stop her. But when her husband arrived she collapsed and died.
“And countless sparrows were twittering in the eaves” when the author states that in the story, it sounds like the birds were singing to her, telling her or letting her know that she was free at last ,or singing her a song to be in a happy mood because her husband just had died. What I think is that they sang to her because she lost her husband and they knew she was free.
“The objects in The story of an Hour that are the arm chair and open window” They mean something, they symbolize Louise Mallard, her sadness then the happiness that she gets when she loses her husband and when she is not under orders now.

“From the window, Louise sees blue sky, fluffy clouds, and tree tops. She hears people and birds singing and smells like rainstorm is coming” Everything she sees, feels, is just joy coming into her new life without her husband, feeling so relieved ,looking out the window like if she got nothing else to lose

The narrator’s point of view in the story is limited. The readers learn in the beginning of the story whose thoughts and feelings are described. In lines 1-3, Chopin states “Knowing that Mrs. Mallard was afflicted with a heart trouble, ...news of her husband’s death.” “Knowing that Mrs. Mallard was afflicted with a heart trouble, great care was taken to break her as gently as possible” (line 1-2). The evidence shows that Josephine and Richards expect Mrs.Mallard to react in a dismal way.…

Opening the once lonely door, there was a hallway that seemed to have just rejoiced with a once depriven necessity. As striking as the first rose in spring, her silky, soft, shiny hair combined with her enticingly exquisite eyes produced a sublime look; it instantly ejected any pressure in the room. Her presence would’ve even made an angry person hopeful. Withered by time, the plethora of thin liable cracks scattered across the olive-dyed floors and indigo walls with an antique circular pattern ; this house was old enough to live in a pangea . However, there was a skeptical sense of suspicion of this person.…

For example, there is no information given upon their relationship in the past. At this point, the inferences that can be taken from Louise’s status and appearances help explain her reactions toward the news. It would seem at first when described as frail and having a heart condition, you would believe Mrs. Mallard is old, but later in the story says she has “a fair, calm face, whose lines bespoke repression” (pg 761, Chopin) which contradicts the reader's belief. Her heart condition might explain why she may feel like a prisoner at times with no freedom, but when she appears more cheerful at the news of her husband's death this can mean a few things. Women used to be prisoners of their husbands with no freedom in the 19th century.…

Author, Kate Chopin, in her short story, The Story of an Hour, conveys very beautifully Mrs. Louise Mallard’s both love and hate for her husband, Mr. Brently Mallard. She makes just choices when she closes the door of her room to stay alone for some time, so that she could collect her thoughts and react to the news. It seems that her husband, Brently would not allow her to leave the house or have friends. She was isolated from the whole world. It is implied therefore she is happy when he is dead because he took so much away from her.…

In the opening of “The Story of an Hour?” by Kate Chopin, we are introduced with the death of Brently Mallard whose wife, who also has heart trouble, is about to hear the saddening news. On the other hand, in the concluding paragraph, the doctors conclude with the wife’s death from heart disease, “of joy that kills”. Therefore what is ironic is the fact that in the end the wife turned out to be dead and not the husband, Mr. Mallard, although throughout the story Chopin made it seem as if the husband was dead. The discrepancy in the story is that Chopin had said that the husband had died in a railroad disaster, which as we now know was false, while the wife’s death turned out to be indeed true. Moreover, in the introduction, we see also see…
