The Zodiac Killer took blame for many murders in the San Francisco Bay area in the late 1960s. To this day he has not been caught. The Zodiac Killer has been directly connected to five murders at the least, he is likely responsible for more (Biography.com).
On October 30 1966, Cheri Jo Bates was at riverside College coming from the library. Bates got in the car and it would not turn on. Police think Bates’s killer approached her with an officer to help. The killer drug Bates behind a nearby shrubbery where a fierce battle was ended. Police found Bates stabbed in the chest and back. Bates had her throat slashed so deeply she was nearly decapitated. It read “I like killing people because it is so much fun, it is more fun than killing wild game in the forest because man is the most dangerous animal of them all.” The letters written by the Zodiac Killer all were closed with a symbol. This symbol included a circle with a cross through it. That Symbol would become known as the Zodiac Killers symbol. In each letter, there were one part of 3 - parts cipher, The Zodiac killer claimed that it contained his identity (biography.com).
The Zodiac Killer revealed himself again. Bryan Hartnell and Cecelia Shepard relaxed on a secluded part of the shore of Lake Berryessa in Napa County. On the map, he had Mount Diablo marked with the Zodiacs symbol, a circle with a cross in it. The Radian theory is explained in his book Times 17. In his book he theorized that the killer was killing to make a figure on the landscape. Gareth thinks the Zodiac chooses this victims due to location (Yancey Pg 74).
Penn’s Radian theory was considered valid by some, but Penn’s idea that he had identified the Zodiac was not. Gareth penn named O’Hare as a Zodiac suspect in his book. O’Hare id linked to the crimes only by inpermanent web of conjecture about morse code. Gareth’s accusations made the national headlines, But it was not taken seriously. O’Hare was a professional and was very respected. No evidence was found against O’Hare (Yancey Pg 75). Rick Marshal was thirty-eight-years-old when Zodiac’s first murder was discovered. Marshall was linked to the crimes not by solid evidence, but by his geographical coincidence.Marshal is considered to be a strong suspect by many investigators. Fingerprints of Marshal match none of those found at any of the crime scenes. As of geographical coincidence, investigators are told Marshal lived in Riverside at the time of the Bates Murder.
