In the book “The Scarlet Letter “ Nathaniel Hawthorne the meaning of the letter A changes throughout the novel. This change is significant as it indicates the personal growth of the characters. Living in a small community around the same people all the time can change people’s opinions about each other, and in this case someone wearing the letter “A” now has to deal with everyone 's opinion about them all at once. When the novel begins, the letter A represents sin that is committing adultery and shows how guilt is a form of everlasting punishment through symbolism and character development.

In any religion it’s a sin to judge any other person because it’s not a person 's place to judge. O exquisite relief! She had not known the weight, until she felt the freedom!” The letter “A” is making Hester feel guilty considering the fact that the “A” stands for adultery. The community around Hester were very discouraging, rude, and judgemental. Hester wanted Pearl to see that her mother was strong and could do anything and to show that even though people talk that doesn’t mean you stop doing what you 're doing. Hester knew that her and Pearl would be facing some challenges but with God on their side and Dimmesdale “protecting” them they would be fine. “Hester Prynne was now fully sensible of the deep injury for which she was responsible to this unhappy man, in permitting him to lie for so many years, or, indeed, for a single moment, at the mercy of one, whose purposes could not be other than malevolent.” This was just a “trial” in their lives and they were going to get through it by having faith in God. With the help of Chillingworth and the rest of the community making it hard for them handle the consequences of Hester’s and Dimmesdale’s sin.
