The use of symbolism in any story is meaningful and important. Whether symbolism is trying to show something that is out of context or it represents the true meaning of an object or idea in the story, symbolism provides knowledge on something that could not be clear in the plot and theme of any story. Symbolism helps the readers to understand a deeper meaning to any story. An excellent example of a story that has symbolism is “Hill like White Elephants” by Ernest Hemingway. The symbolism found in Ernest Hemingway’s work has important value to a story, but also can be interpreted by readers deeply and from a different point of view. The luggage represents the amount of freedom the couple has. The quote from the story that describes what the American man is, “He did not say anything but looked at the bags against the wall of the station. There were labels on them from all the hotels where they spent nights” (Hemingway 593). This quote demonstrates the couple’s freedom of doing anything they want, such as traveling and adventuring around the world. The freedom that the couple has will be gone forever if the couple happens to have the baby. This will be due to the couple having to take care for the baby and will not be able to travel around the world. The lifestyle that Jig and the American man is currently living is something they both enjoy a lot and they will not be able to continue their current lifestyle if a baby is born. The American man says, “No, it isn’t. And once they take it away, you never get it back (Hemingway 593). This line refers to the couple having the whole world to themselves and when the baby is born, the couple will lose it all and will not ever get the whole world back ever again. The decision of having the abortion or not decides if the couple can live their nice and fancy lifestyle in traveling and exploring the world or giving up the lifestyle for a new one that has the couple and the baby included. An author named Lewis Weeks Jr. states, “A number of images and emotional reactions floods the reader’s mind as the dialog swiftly makes clear that the girl wants the baby, not the abortion.” (Weeks Jr. 76). There were many references and symbols such as the title that Jig wants the baby and the relationship between the American man and Jig would be over at any situation possible due to the conflict of having the baby or

In the short story “Hills like White Elephants,” the author Ernest Hemingway creates a very complex relationship between an American man and woman. The majority of the passage involves the two having a deep conversation about an abortion that seems rather confusing at first to the reader. The couple bickers back and forth with each other about a certain “operation” that the woman is supposed to be having. At the end of the story, the author has one last paragraph that describes the man walking away from his female companion and observing the other people waiting at the train station they are at. This scene displays a better understanding of the kind of relationship the man and woman have while expressing in dialogue what both of their thoughts are concerning the operation.…

Symbolism gives a person the ability to communicate something outside the barrier of language. A symbol is a person, place, or an object that is representative of something beyond itself. Symbols are found everywhere and in everything, and can be hard to recognize if a student is not familiar with the context or the situation. For a student to be able to acknowledge the symbols and their meanings is critical for their success in analyzing a literary work. I believe that symbolism is important for students to know because it allows them to gain a deeper understanding of the story.…

An example of symbolism is the color black, in most stories the color black means something evil or bad or the color white as life and perfect. Also the allusion is where you make a reference to another story, movie, and even religion. Authors of “Harrison Bergeron”,”The Lottery”, and “2BRO2B” use these things in their stories without you even realizing it.…

In Timothy D. O’Brien’s criticism of Ernest Hemmingway’s “Hills Like White Elephants,” he concentrates mainly on how allusion and word play contribute to the central conflict of the short story. The story mainly consists of the dialogue between the American and Jig. The choice of the nickname Jig, along with the repetition of certain words such as “know” and “fine” stood out to me while reading the story. In addition to the word choice, the train never comes at the end of the story, leaving it open for interpretation. The O’Brian discusses these word choices in “Allusion, Word-Play, and the Central Conflict in Hemingway’s ‘Hills Like White Elephants’” used by Hemingway in “Hills Like White Elephants” play a huge part in the overall conflict…

White Elephants can be seen as a blessing and a curse considering that since the color is rare, it is a burden since it can’t work and always has to get fed just like a newborn. Unplanned pregnancy is the theme that sets up the drive for the author Ernest Hemingway in his short story “Hills like white elephants”. The type of writing that Hemingway uses in order to accomplish his work is the iceberg theory, where the information that is given is used to seek the hidden meaning. Hemingway uses literary elements such as: allegory, diction, motif, and plot to unfold the decisions of a young woman when handling the pressures of an unborn child. The presence of the white elephant doesn’t prompt itself throughout the story, nor does the words unborn…
