Everyone values personal space, theirs, and others. It’s a right that is expected to be given to and by everyone. It’s something that is expected of everyone like Norms. Norms are defined as “visible and invisible rules of conduct through which society are structed.” (openstax 58). How close individuals get to one another depends on the degree of that’s relationship. Due to this well-known social norm across the U.S. it is very hard to see someone voluntarily, sitting, talking, or even hugging a total stranger without others finding the person to be irregular or strange. For my experiment, I chose to experiment on the importance of personal space in a public shopping center, Wal-Mart.

These non-interactions I had with those I didn’t hug, to see how the symbolic interaction theory came to play. Symbolic interaction theory is “a micro-level theory that focuses on the relationships among individuals within a society through language and symbol.” (openstax 17). Having me the strange or weird person in the room was very interesting. Watching and noticing how other who witnessed my behavior reacted to me brought like to this theory in many ways. One, just by having the courage to violate this norm made people interact very odd towards me. Like when I had the confrontation the young man’s girlfriend. Even though the problem, which was resolved calmly, still attracted people with very loud opinions; even if they don’t verbally voice it. when people noticed that she was angry started to stand and look at me with disapproving looks on their face. A prime example would be this lady that I hadn’t even noticed had walked up came stood next to the young lady and asked her what was going on. That’s when I got the chance to explain what was going on. Even though I didn’t know any of these people the simple thought of disrupting social control made them feel uneasy about me as a person. Made them question my true intentions
