Symbolic Interactionism – Research Plan My area of interest is Symbolic Interactionism which is a social psychological theory originated by George Robert Mead. The theory focuses on how humans give meaning to the world about them through symbols and interaction. Based on this theory, humans live in a world that is mostly socially constructed. I chose this topic because it contributes to the learning how of how people move in situations, in learning about themselves and how society influences them. The topic I chose is interesting because it helps explain and give a meaning of clarity to how people interact with one another and how society molds the individual; it is something …show more content…
Depending on the situation, the context could easily be different. Like a typical sassy homosexual, I will use words completely out of context but they hold a lot of meaning behind it. For example, the word “shade” which people will automatically think of seeking refuge from the sun but I am actually taking a shot at the person without them knowing. Or the word “coin” which people would think of as a singular penny, quarter or other change like form of money but I actually mean a pay check/big money. This is called definition of the situation, it is what people use to know what is expected of them and what is expected of others in a situation. Through this, people obtain a sense of the statuses and roles of those involved in the situation so that they know how to behave. The sad part about my topic is that it is required a broad area of study and it can be interpreted in so many different ways. Symbolic Interactionism received a lot of criticisms surrounding how broad it is to be considered a reality. They say the theory is good when used to define a wide variety of human behavior but not when one tries to purport it to everything making it difficult to apply. It tries to do too much and it needs a refined focus. However as the theory continues to be studied, in a few years, they will be able to link it to the mass …show more content…
