The Power of Bollywood Bollywood is a film industry in India and is considered one of the largest. It is known for its romance and music, which is the central theme in their movies. As this film industry grows bigger, it is leaving a very impactful expressions on the viewers and maybe in their life. One out of the three major sociological paradigms, which are structural functionalism, social conflict theory and symbolic interactionism, can be used to explain the power of Bollywood. “Symbolic interactionism is the sociological perspective focusing on the role of symbols and how their meanings are shared and understood by those involved in human interaction” (Ritzer). Symbols can be hand gestures, sign, body languages, words or objects. The strengths of symbolic interactionism are the ability of interpretation and human communication. Since humans are able to think and develop thoughts, they are able to interpret what they see. They have the capacity to create meaning and understanding. This creates a strength by humans take in the different symbols, interpret it in their own way, and use it for human interaction. They can modify the meaning and use it the way they think is the best. People use these symbols daily in their life to communicate also. Symbolic interactionism can be summed as the following. “Thus, to understand social life is to understand the processes through which individuals interpret situations and construct their actions with respect to each other” (House). On the other hand, symbolic interactionism has weakness and criticism. One weakness is it reject other ideas. Since it focuses on human and the way they interact using symbols, it doesn’t focus on other ideas, such as biological. Another weakness is it has a lot of emphasis on personal behavior. It doesn’t talk about what other people’s behavior would be if one acts differently based on the symbol. In addition, it is isolated from other development.
