Throughout the course of the discussion section, I will shed light on the correlation between the findings from the questionnaire and the theory of symbolic interaction itself.
1. Are qualitative research methods best suited for Symbolic interaction?
Research methods specific to symbolic interaction are often qualitative and include participant observation which is basically an inside view of an individual in their natural habitat. According to Blumer “the meaning of things directs action” (O’Shaughnessy, 1992: 158), this means that to comprehend human behaviour, it is vital to understand the definitions and meanings they form. These meanings and definitions can be affected by factors such as traditional beliefs, rules, laws and …show more content…
some people may consider them as family and therefore will choose to maintain the illness of the dog whereas for some people the dog is simply a pet which can be replaced and therefore they will prefer not to maintain the illness but instead put the dog down, this situation presented to people clearly shows that people act towards objects based on the meanings it has to them. Likewise, family also means different things to different individuals. Symbolic interaction simply means that people follow rules in a society and society itself has a huge impact on the way people see situations and how people react.
Symbolic interaction is being integrated into society more and more today because words are being created that have reference to only a specific group of people. The use of gestures and signs as a means of communication of people’s own personal preferences and perspectives show that symbolic interaction is being used incorporated into society.

Here, you will be given an overview of the results, understand some of the limitations to my research and the importance of symbolic interaction.
Family, job opportunities, a pet, a diary, family functioning, religious rituals and a friend are all concepts which have symbolic meanings in individual’s lives. These concepts all exist within the mind of people and all of these symbols and meanings represent specific things based on resemblance or association. Gender and race, concepts which usually had much importance in society as a means of racism, now has been overlooked and gender is simply either something that is learnt over time and race is a source of identity.
Limitation of the research include the language barrier that I currently face, because I am currently in china, it is difficult for me to conduct a participant observant study with a Chinese family because I cannot fully comprehend Chinese language. Another setback was that due to time constraints, extensive research and personal interviews in different situations could not be
