In the directorial work of Pete Docter and Ronnie del Carmen, the Disney Pixar film Inside Out (2015) expresses a comical tale of symbolic characters to represent a child’s inner emotion. The character Riley (Kaitlyn Dias) exhibits five main emotions: Joy (Amy Poehler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Fear (Bill Hader), Anger (Lewis Black), and Disgust (Mindy Kaling). The adventure begins when the emotional beings inside her mind meddle with her core memories. This action sends Riley into a roller coaster of emotional loss and personality alteration. Her mental motherboard becomes altered through a traumatic experience of losing Joy and Sadness. The characters inside her mind must come to a congenial agreement to share memories together and accept imperfections. Inside Out embodies Riley’s emotional development, which is visually depicted in an adventure of her main five emotions; however, the film ultimately expresses …show more content…
It challenges the theory of everyone should be happy and if one is not, then that person would be considered unstable. Riley’s mind is led by the character of Joy, who often overlooks the other emotions. When Joy and Sadness leave to retrieve Riley’s core memories, her personality begins to deteriorate. The child appears to fall into a depressive state with a lack of control. In her society, those around her notice her change in personality. In hockey, Riley lacks the vivacious playing skills and passion she once had. The act of Joy neglecting the other emotional characters reveals how Riley’s expressions are influenced by societal standards of what she is required to feel. The first of these theories is the James Lange Theory. The basic idea of the James Lange Theory is that once an event is processed in our minds, then we feel an emotion that correlates with the event to allow our mind to reason (Myers 464). An example of this theory in the movie Inside Out is when Riley is sitting down having dinner with her family in their new house in California and she has already lost Joy, her driving emotion in life. When she is asked a question by her mother that she would have normally wanted to talk about she sits there quietly for a second processing the question (the arousal). Because Joy is no longer in her head, disgust tries to respond to the question as joy would but comes off very rude and abrasive (the expressive behavior).…

Certain individuals must go through obstacles and the ignorant thought of the society they live in, to reach the contentment they desire. Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 and F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby both illustrate the protagonist’s difficulties towards their goals of happiness.…

Pixar has truly created something special with the film inside out. The director, Pete Docter embarked on a wild plot, exploring how emotions interact and fight for control of our lives. Symbolism in To Kill a Mocking Bird Whether it be in literature or even shown in pictures, people use things to represent something with a deeper meaning and that’s called symbolism. In the book “To Kill a Mockingbird” by author Harper Lee, various different themes or symbols are active throughout the book all directly or in some way being tied to the ultimate theme of the book, which is not being able to understand someone until you experience life from their point of view. The most apparent reoccurring theme though is equality because of the fact it’s symbolized through people, birds, and even inanimate objects that Scout and Jem encounter over the course of the book in the tree that turns out to play a bigger part of the story as the…
