Symbol Of Conformity In Fahrenheit 451

In a world where wondering is against the law, and burning books is normal, there isn’t room to express yourself. Going against the societal norms is extremely dangerous considering they are strict, and censored. A plethora of people in society are too scared to even try to express themselves, or to look towards the past to find answers about the present. Although most are scared of the consequences they may meet, there are some people who rebel against this conformed world, and learn about what used to be. In the novel Fahrenheit 451, Clarisse McClellan is used as a symbol for non-conformity. Clarisse expresses her individuality throughout the day when she takes walks with Guy Montag. She is one who wonders about the world. She tells Montag stories that her uncle tells her, and they allow him to see what things were before. Clarisse does not care about herself, like most people, but she cares about what they do, and how they live. She doesn’t watch the walls, or talk about sports all the time, she talks more about life, and the environment around her. As long as there are some people who rebel against the society the past won’t be forgotten. If there are more people like Clarisse McClellan there will be more people to teach the rest of society the importance of expressing themselves. Once they express themselves they find out who they really are, and when they find out who they are they begin to change society. They start to be happier and they begin to wonder about what they used to be and how the past was much less conformed than they are.
