Symbiotic Relationship

When learning about symbiotic relationships in biology, many people would define community service as being an example of commensalism, where one party benefits and the other is not affected at all. But after hundreds of hours of service, I can say that serving others is most similar to mutualism, where both individuals benefit tremendously. Being involved in volunteer groups and philanthropic organizations has taught me that community service not only benefits others, but helps an individual achieve self-actualization and learn about their true identity.
My love for helping others and willingness to volunteer rooted from the care I have for my brother. My younger brother was born with a learning disability and it is one of the hardest, but

My mother came over to the table and checked my work and with a proud grin, nodded and said “Good job.” She then checked my brother’s work and said, “Luciano, let’s approach this differently and try again.” My brother had started crying and asked my mother and I “Why is school always easy for Gianna, but for me everything is always so hard?” My seven year old self, with bright pink painted fingernails and braided pigtails replied, “Well, that’s what makes me and you different, and I am here to help you.” From that day forward, I saw how my brother felt, and truly understood where most of his frustrations rooted from. I also learned that as a person without any disabilities, it is my duty to help others. Day in and day out I would sit with him and explain each and every homework problem to him until he understood it. Even if it took all night, which it has in many cases, we sat there and worked hard until all of the work was done. My success in inspiring my brother to be confident and indefatigable motivated me to continue what I was good at and branch out to my community and voluntarily spend hundreds of hours to help those in

Symbiosis or a symbiotic relationship is a close a relationship/interaction between two organisms of different species. The three main types of symbiosis are mutualism, parasitism, and commensalism. Mutualism is the symbiotic relationship where both the species benefits from the other. For example, clownfish live in sea anemones and because of this the clownfish eventually become immune to the paralyzing sting of the sea anemone. The sea anemone gives the clownfish a home and protects the clownfish from predators while the clownfish can attract other fish into the sea anemone giving it food.…

Clown fish and sea anemone have a mutualistic symbiotic relationship (a partnership that helps both of them). Since the tentacles of the anemone are deadly to most fish, clown fish are protected from predators by living in anemones. When threatened they dive into the tentacles of the anemone for safety. Clown fish also lay their eggs at the base of the anemone for protection of their offspring. In return, the clownfish chase away fish and other animals that could harm the anemone and help the anemone by keeping it clean and free of leftovers and other waste.…

My parents relocated my siblings and I from Quetzaltenango, Guatemala to San Diego, California in order to allow us to lead a prosperous future. Unlike children in Guatemala, we were presented with an excellent education in San Diego and indulged in learning. For as long as I can recall, discovering new facts and learning new things about the world fascinated me; consequently, I quickly began wanting to help others in their pursuit of learning. I was always the first to offer help to my struggling peers and would stay behind during recess to assist them. My acts were fueled by the desire to see students succeed and I would do anything to help them prosper.…

Service is something that is very important to me because it positively impacts my life. Working to help others makes me feel happy because I take pleasure in helping others. When I helped at a hypothermia shelter, it was a nice feeling to be able to give people food who couldn’t get it otherwise, and to see their smiles while I served them. I believe that community service has made me a better person through giving me opportunities to work with people who are less fortunate than me. Whether it be through helping learning, serving food, or just overall helping take care of children, I think that the service that I have given has positively impacted others’ lives.…

I would like to extend my sincerest thanks for taking your time to consider my candidacy for the Educational Psychology/School Psychology program at the University of Wisconsin. I have always been drawn to behavioral psychology, the phenomenon of learning, and educational processes. After discovering that I had a special talent for working with children and at-risk youth, I eagerly began my academic pursuit in elementary education. With ever-increasing learning demands, and limited time and resources, I quickly learned that inevitably some children fail to perform adequately among their peers. This reality came quite clear to me through my experience working and substitute teaching in a public elementary school.…

An elderly woman who got to take part in a high school community service project states, “Many think that volunteering is all about what you give. But what catches you by surprise is how much you receive in return.” This demonstrates why many people do not feel that they should give back because they do not believe the benefits that they can get from it as well. Consequently, when creating that feeling of happiness and satisfaction in someone else’s life, it comes back to the person creating it. Volunteering to help someone get tutored, help the handicapped, involve themselves with a program like Meals on Wheels, certain environmental work, etc., not only does one gain from that, but one’s community has been helped because of them.…

Community service is an activity carried out by a person or group of people that addresses human and community needs. Although some people make think it’s just another chore to do, it helps bring out the best in people by forcing them to take a role of responsibility and leadership while helping others at the same time. It also teaches good morals and values such as honesty, gratefulness, and respect; values that will help guide me throughout the rest of my life. Over the summer my PLTW engineering teacher sent out an email asking for help with the new robotics kits for the newest class offered at the high school, Principles of Engineering.…
