Sylvia Plath has caused me to take a different path in not only my understanding of poetry, but the appreciation of it as well. This is the story of Sylvia Plath; a gruesome yet great story. There are many great things about Plath’s contemporary work. From her life to her death she was an inspiration to us all. Sylvia Plath’s Poetry reflects on her battles of despair with her personal struggles as an artist and as a woman in the modern century. Plath grew up in a very academic household in Massachusetts. Her father Otto Plath was a German biology professor at Boston University. Her mom was a masters student at the university. When Plath was eight her dad died of diabetes. This was when she wrote her first poem “ Daddy.” At the age of eight Plath started having an obsession over death, and she started cutting herself.
Plath kept a journal at the age of eleven and published her poems in regional magazines and newspapers in Massachusetts. ¨Her poems were very sentimental, solipstic, and very harsh even at the age of eleven.¨ (Hemphill, Stephanie Sylvia Plath biography) In 1950 when Plath was in high school she earned a fulbright scholarship to cambridge university in England because of her published poems and short stories.
