Pioneer Paper—Sylvia Hurtado
Career: Past and Present As our country continues to grow in population, so too does the diversity of our future and people. Diversity can be seen as an improvement; if diversity is encouraged, multicultural perspectives can lead to pathways and futures never thought of previously. One person paving the way for diversity in our futures, particularly higher education, is Sylva Hurtado. She was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas. She received her bachelor of arts in sociology from Princeton University. She obtained her master’s degree in education at Harvard Graduate School. Afterwards, she went on to UCLA to receive her doctorate degree in education.

Interactions with diverse peers inside the classroom and outside the classroom are influencing factors of diversification of student environments. Results also showed that curriculums that were diversified aid students in exposure to diversity and diverse communication. This study demonstrated how institutions need to structure and facilitate interactions between diverse communities on college campuses around the nation (Hurtado, 2005). Her research concerning climate has begun a revolution for colleges to begin to take underrepresented students into consideration, starting with the mission statement to curriculum changes. Due to the increase in underrepresented students on college campuses, including first generation students and minority students, her focus has been to show that improvement and development in colleges is crucial for student success (Hurtado & Ponjuan, 2005). Student success needs to have a shift since the demographic makeup of college students has shifted. Development from within the college is important. Faculty members’ and professors’ exposure to diversity is a necessity for the development of college campuses as well. Hurtado et al. (2011) discussed how faculty involvement is important to student success but it is also important for the faculty to make sure they are capable of suiting the needs of their students, particularly those who are from underrepresented
