Elmore, Ohio, a quaint little farm town about an hour away from Sylvania, is where I was born, and raised till I was about four. Elmore was somewhat different form Sylvania. Everyone knew each other and looked out for each other no matter what, they were there for you. They were an extended family and wanted the absolute best for everyone, and I think those are some of the biggest things that differ from Elmore to sylvania that also helped shape who I am as a person. You wouldn't expect anything different from one person to the next, but I always seemed to be different in one way or another no matter where I went.
I began to push the boundaries and the “norms” of Sylvania, Ohio, The place where my family had moved to when I was four, but

For the next five years I lived in White Plains, New York and living there was unique, in that owning a vehicle was obsolete. I was able to walk to the store, the park and to school. The ability to walk everywhere gave my the opportunity to build relationships with my whole community and to many, it may come as surprise that even with living in a big city most of the people living within it knew each other. Even though I come from a culturally distinct country and lived in the city that never sleeps I can only call Baltimore, Maryland my home. Living in Baltimore, has had a big impact on my life because it has shaped my identity and personality.…

I grew up in a place where the neighbors lived a mile away, the animals ran loose all the time, and if you really felt like it, you could walk outside naked and nobody could really see you. It was a small town where everybody knew everybody; when driving down the road, you knew who was in the car passing you, and by the off chance you didn't, you still waved anyways. Going to the local gas station for a soda or to fill up the truck turned into a trip to go see your friends and visit. The family lived right around the corner, and bonfires were a regular thing. "Sedgewickville Population: 173" is what the town's sign said.…

It’s crazy how I think that I haven't experienced the world yet. It’s like I’m living in my own little bubble, protected against the actual world and all of its dangers that come with it, yet I still know what's out there. The closer I get to graduation, the more the bubble begins to crack. There are so many expectations out there. All the looks and judgments piercing into my back because of my race.…

    Essay On Mt. Horeb

As human beings we inherently fear change, especially those of us with social shortcomings, who prefer routine schedules to overwhelmingly new experiences and unpredictability. Such was the case for me. My family moved when I was just turning three years old to Mount Horeb, Wisconsin, a small town of about 8,000 people, located about thirty miles from Madison. Mount Horeb is a quaint suburb known for its Norwegian heritage. It is a fine place to raise a family, but as I got older, I realized that I no longer felt welcomed and sheltered by the small and tightly-knit community, but rather I felt trapped, paralyzed by the limitations of a suffocating town.…

In the short story, “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been”, Joyce Carol Oates describes the story of Connie, a fifteen year old teenager who is too concerned with her appearance and is often scolded by her mother. This dark story takes place during the 1960s, while the story’s location can’t be pinned down to anything more specific than suburbia. This ambiguity gives the tale a universal relevance. Yet a definite sense of place looms large in the narrative. Joyce Carol Oates describes in detail a new suburban, American youth culture; one with trips to the sacred burger joint, hierarchies and the importance of beauty, and idols of brash popular music.…

Growing Old It seems that since the beginning of history we have seen explorers and kings search every corner of the world for the fabled Fountain of Youth in hopes that they will stay forever young. All of them failed. Everyone dreads growing older. We shrink from the responsibilities that age brings us in a futile attempt to return to the care free days of our youth.…

Moving from the diverse state of California at age 8 to a small town like Coeur d'Alene Idaho, both possesing drastically different communities. I was able to find my sense of belonging in both, but in one more than the other. Belonging is something we all strive to have, being accepted from our peers, and thriving in a society. Being apart of the particular community of Coeur d Alene allowed for me to branch out into multiple communities. Allowing to find my sense of belonging with other members in activities and hobbies I enjoyed such as; being outdoors and playing sports.…

Have you ever noticed that not every city or town is the same? I have lived in Hillman, Michigan almost my entire life, but for two years I lived in San Diego, California. Over time, as I get older, I can see the similarities and differences between each place. Even though Michigan and California do have similarities I feel that they have more differences. One of those major differences between the two places would be the weather.…

My siblings stayed behind in Cumming, Georgia to not complicate their already flustered lives. Richmond Hill for as far as I knew it to be was a desolated town, the skatepark there was filled alcoholic teens, and the representation of a church was non-existent as my Mother and I had a blank sleight in terms of knowing the people of the town. From a lack of a reason to attend church, and from wanting to dissociate myself from the already standing image of people who traveled to the skatepark, both activities were abandoned in my family. The house was surgical bonded…

I am not a big fan of it here, the air sometimes feels thick with pollution and in the winter everywhere is so slushy with ice and salt. Growing up in the late 80s through the 90s seemed like such a long time ago. I grew up in a one story house which consisted of myself, my mother, older brother and sister. I was the baby of the family so evenings consisted of arguments with my siblings, dinner, and followed by sports or playing outside. On Fridays after school, I would head to the west side of Columbus for the weekend to spend time with my father, grandmother and other paternal relatives that lived nearby. I loved the time I spent out west with my father.…
